8 Expert Tips For Winning At Scrabble

Scrabble is Britain’s best-selling board game and it's by far the most popular word game. In 2018, it will celebrate its 70th birthday.

In this post, I’m going to share with you 8 of the most effective match-winning tips used by Scrabble champions. Personally, I’ve also experimented with them and I’ve seen a drastic improvement in my performances over the years.

1. Learn the two and three letter words like your own backyard

There are numerous two and three letter word lists out there and an expert Scrabble player will most definitely be familiar with at least 70-80 percent of the words on those lists. An innovative way to memorize them is to use a mobile application called “Memrise”. Keep using newly learnt words in your practice games and you’re bound to improve.

2. When you're stuck, Use the 'Pair Pounder' technique

Few have heard of this magnificent technique. I think it'll be best to describe it using an example:
Say my opponent makes the first move, "LASER".

If I'm going to make the word "PAN" then it would be a wise idea to apply the Pair Pounder technique here.

Through this method, I've bagged a whooping 19 points from a lousy three letter word!

3. Never underestimate the power of the letter "S"

An "S" is often called the golden letter by Scrabble champs because it can be used as a hook. Let's assume your opponent makes the word "PLAYER" and you have an S in your tile rack. You can add the "S" after PLAYER to make PLAYERS and another word, for example, SLAYED. In this scenario, you get points for all the letters in PLAYERS and in SLAYED; Kind of like killing two birds with one stone (no offence, birds).

4. When you play with experts, try to learn as much as you can from their moves

Whenever you get the opportunity to compete with somebody more skilled at the game than you are, ponder over his style and observe how he executes his moves. This will automatically effect the way you approach the game.

5. Use your tile rack to your advantage

When your opponent is planning his move, don’t just sit there. Keep re-ordering the tiles on your tile rack to brainstorm possible words. Many people tend to do this in their heads and this is not nearly as fast as doing it with actual tiles. You will discover several new words in the process.

6. Get as many 'hot spots' as you can

A hot spot, in Scrabble, refers to a tile position where there is a word or letter score bonus. The most coveted hot spots are the triple word score ones. Try to mold the game in such a way so that your opponent doesn't get a chance to deploy his tiles there, in order to increase your chances of winning.

7. The more you panic, the more likely you are to lose a match

If you’re in a position where your points are far below your opponent’s and it doesn’t seem like the tile God’s are in your favour then take a deep breath and try to calm yourself down. The more you fret, the harder it will become for your brain to come up with good words.

8. Invest in a good thesaurus and frequently scroll through it

I recommend you to get the Collin’s Official Scrabble Thesaurus because it’s comprehensive and it is used by almost all Scrabble Championships for ensuring word validity. You’ll be surprised by just how helpful it can be to scroll through a thesaurus. While you scan through pages, some words will look or sound peculiar to you causing them to stick to your memory.
